Client Spotlight – Alberta Irrigation Districts Association

In southern Alberta, water has always shaped where communities grow, what farmers can produce, and how businesses develop. For eight decades, the Alberta Irrigation Districts Association has worked to ensure the systems supporting that prosperity remain efficient, sustainable, and prepared for the future.

Established in 1946, the Alberta Irrigation Districts Association (AIDA) represents the shared interests of member irrigation districts across southern Alberta. The Association coordinates joint initiatives, advocates for effective water policy, advances research, and promotes a greater understanding of the important role irrigation plays in Alberta’s economy and communities.

The scale of that work is significant. AIDA’s 11 member districts collectively represent more than 1.5 million acres. Across southern Alberta, approximately 8,000 kilometres of canals and pipelines and 57 water storage reservoirs deliver water for food production, municipalities, businesses, livestock operations, wildlife habitat, wetlands, and recreation.

At the heart of AIDA’s work is responsible water management. The Association and its members promote efficient irrigation practices, participate in water quality and conservation research, support efforts to prevent aquatic invasive species, and work collaboratively with governments and other organizations to address emerging water challenges. These efforts help strengthen both agricultural productivity and the long-term resilience of southern Alberta’s communities and ecosystems.

That forward-looking approach was reflected in AIDA’s 2024 Adaptation Roadmap for the South Saskatchewan River Basin. Developed through a working group of more than 40 participants, including municipalities, First Nations, industry, irrigation districts, watershed organizations, environmental groups, and the provincial government, the roadmap identified 23 potential infrastructure, policy, and management options to improve water security and support regional growth.

As Alberta plans for a future shaped by population growth, economic development, and changing water conditions, AIDA continues to bring experience, collaboration, and practical solutions to the table. By supporting vibrant irrigation districts and responsible water management, the Association is helping sustain food production, strengthen rural communities, and build lasting prosperity across southern Alberta.
