The Government of Alberta continues health care refocusing efforts with its first major announcement establishing one of the four agencies that will comprise the restructured AHS. Recovery Alberta, the new agency focusing on mental health and addiction, will be helmed by AHS’ current Chief Program Officer for Addiction and Mental Health and Correctional Health Services, Kerry Bales, as CEO.

Bales has been a registered nurse since 1998, receiving his BSc in Nursing from the University of Alberta that same year. After working in health care across a variety of functions, including providing front-line nursing care in the community, Bales became AHS’ Chief Zone Officer for the central zone in 2009. After being promoted to Senior Program Officer in Health System Integration in 2019, he started working in addiction and mental health in 2020 and was promoted to CPO in 2022. In 2018 he received a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership from Royal Roads University.
