Client Spotlight – Kehewin Cree Nation

Rooted in Treaty 6 territory in northeastern Alberta, Kehewin Cree Nation is building for the future while remaining grounded in the culture, traditions, and values that have sustained its people for generations.

Kehewin Cree Nation, located south of Bonnyville, is a community whose history and identity are deeply connected to the land. Today, the Nation is experiencing a period of renewal, driven by a commitment to strengthening community infrastructure, creating opportunities for its Members, and investing in the next generation.

Over the past several years, that commitment has translated into meaningful progress across the community. Kehewin has built 46 new homes, providing more families with safe and secure places to live. At the same time, a major water line extension has provided 120 additional homes with access to clean, reliable water, strengthening essential infrastructure and supporting the Nation’s long-term growth.

Young people have been at the centre of this progress. Kehewin has invested in a new school, improved road access and added new school buses to support students. New recreational amenities, including a skate park and skating rink, are creating more spaces for children and families to gather, stay active, and build connections within the community.

These investments reflect a broader approach to Nation building. Kehewin Cree Nation is focused not simply on delivering individual projects, but on creating the foundations for a stronger and more self-determined future. Improvements to housing, education, transportation, water infrastructure, recreation, and community services are helping create an environment where Members can thrive.

That progress is particularly meaningful given Kehewin’s recent history. After years of federal financial intervention, the Nation regained control of its finances and has moved forward with major projects that had previously stalled. A new water treatment plant helped end a long-term drinking water advisory in 2021, while the Nation’s new school officially opened in 2022.

Kehewin also continues to be a strong voice for Treaty rights and the relationship between First Nations and the Crown. In 2026, the Nation hosted Treaty leaders, Elders, youth, and allies for a national gathering focused on natural resource jurisdiction and the future of the Treaty relationship.

Through these efforts, Kehewin Cree Nation is demonstrating what community-led progress can look like. By investing in its people, strengthening essential infrastructure, creating opportunities for youth, and advancing its Treaty rights, the Nation is building a future shaped by its own priorities and grounded in the strength of its community.
