Key Influencer – Gord Johnston – Chief Executive Officer for Assisted Living Alberta

Gord Johnston was recently appointed as the first Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Assisted Living Alberta. This newly established health agency will launch in the fall, supporting older adults and vulnerable Albertans in accessing care. As CEO, Johnston will lead Assisted Living Alberta’s efforts to build a more integrated, person-centered health care system across the province.

Johnston is an experienced public servant and affordable housing executive. Most recently, he served as the CEO of Civida, the largest provider of affordable housing in northern Alberta. Johnston has also held various executive positions with the Government of Alberta. This includes serving as Chief Strategy Officer for the Ministry of Human Services and as Assistant Deputy Minister of both Child and Family Services and Advanced Education.

Committed to community service, Johnston has served on the Board of Directors for several organizations, including the Canadian Housing and Renewal Association. His contributions to the province of Alberta have been recognized with the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2022 and the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025.

Johnston was born and raised in Saskatchewan. He holds two master’s degrees, one in Speech Language Pathology and the other in Health Services Administration.
